Introduction
Ever wondered how search engines understand what your web page is about?
And how they crawl and index each page and rank them for various search keywords?
The answer lies in on-page SEO.
By optimizing elements like titles, headings, and meta descriptions, you can help search engines accurately interpret and rank your content, driving more organic traffic to your site.
But it’s not just about search engines!
Well-structured, accurate, and meaningful titles and headings are also easier for users to understand, allowing them to navigate your web page more effectively and ultimately improving user experience.
This post will guide you through the art of crafting impactful on-page SEO elements that both search engines and users will love, with practical examples.

Page Titles for SEO
Your page title is the first impression users get in search results. It’s crucial to make it count!
Format and Length:
- Follow a consistent format: For example: <Target Keyword(s)> <Modifier(s)> <USP> | Brand Name
* USP: Unique Selling Proposition: it’s the key factors that set a business apart and why it is the best solution for customers based on their unique needs - Keep it concise: Aim for 50-60 characters to avoid truncation in search results.
- Use title case: Capitalize principal words for readability.

Best Practices:
- Keyword placement: Include your target keyword(s) close to the beginning of the title.
- Accuracy: Ensure the title accurately reflects the page content.
- Keyword optimization: Incorporate relevant keywords without keyword stuffing.
- Local SEO: Include your city or state if applicable.
- Clarity and appeal: Write concise, clear, and compelling titles.
- Uniqueness: Make each page title unique.
- Brand recognition: Include your brand name, especially for branded searches.
- Stand out: Consider using special characters like [brackets] to stand out in search engine results pages (SERPs).
Examples of Good Page Titles:

Headings for SEO
Headings structure your content and make it easier for both users and search engines to understand.
Best Practices:
- H1: Use H1 tags for the main title on the page, ensuring it’s easily identifiable.
- Consistency: Maintain consistency between the page title and the H1 heading.
- Hierarchy: Structure content with H2, H3, etc., maintaining the hierarchy order for readability and SEO.
- Keyword usage: Include relevant keywords in headings, but prioritize readability and user experience.
Examples of Good Headings:
Below are a few examples shows a more realistic heading structure for a longer blog post or guide. They demonstrate how to use H2s to break down main topics and H3s to further organize subtopics within those sections. The use of an H4 under an H3 also shows how to maintain proper heading hierarchy.
Here is an example of possible H1-H6 headings for a web page about backpacking in Yosemite.
- H1: The Ultimate Guide to Backpacking in Yosemite National Park
- H2: Choosing the Right Backpack
- H3: Backpack Size and Capacity
- H3: Backpack Features to Consider
- H3: Top Backpack Brands for Hiking
- H4: [Specific Backpack Model] Review
- H2: Planning Your Backpacking Trip
- H3: Choosing Your Trail
- H3: Obtaining Permits
- H3: Leave No Trace Principles
- H2: Shelter and Sleeping
- H2: Cooking and Food
- H2: Navigation and Safety
- H2: Conclusions
- H2: Choosing the Right Backpack
Here are a couple more examples, with headings for a blog post I’ve written, and a dog sitter’s website I created.

However…
Most articles can effectively structure their content using H1-H3, or maybe H4 in some cases. Using all six heading levels can make the content appear overly complex and may not be necessary unless you have a very long and intricate piece with multiple layers of information.
It’s important to remember that headings are primarily for organizing content and improving readability for both users and search engines. Using too many heading levels can have the opposite effect, making the content harder to digest.
So, unless your content truly requires that level of granularity, stick to a simpler heading structure with H1-H3 (or H4 if needed).
How To Use Headings
Although it can be a bit different for different text editors or web page builders, most rich text editors these days should allow you to choose the heading (H1-H6) for your content.
Below is a screenshot of how it’s done within the native WordPress text editor.

How to Write Meta Descriptions for SEO
Meta descriptions provide a brief summary of your page’s content in search results.
Format and Length:
- Ideal length: Aim for 150-160 characters to prevent truncation.
- Conciseness: Write 1-3 concise sentences using active voice.
Best Practices:
- Accurate summary: Summarize the page’s content accurately.
- Keyword usage: Include relevant keywords naturally, avoiding keyword stuffing.
- User focus: Address user intent and highlight unique value propositions.
- Compelling language: Use persuasive language to encourage clicks.
- Call to action: Add a clear call to action (e.g., “Learn more,” “Shop now”).
- Product pages: Include specific product information (e.g., price, features).
- Optimize first paragraph: Ensure the first paragraph of content is optimized, as Google may use it instead of the meta description.
Examples of Good Meta Descriptions:
A good example of meta description for the The Ultimate Guide to Backpacking in Yosemite National Park post mentioned in the above example would be:
“Plan your unforgettable backpacking adventure in Yosemite. Explore top trails, gear tips, permit info, and expert advice for a safe and enjoyable trip.” (151 characters)
“Master SEO audits with this guide. Step-by-step instructions with an overview of free and paid SEO audit tools for technical and on-page optimization.” (150 characters)
“Master the art of on-page SEO. Learn how to craft effective page titles, headings, and meta descriptions that boost your search rankings and engage users.” (154 characters)
Updating Your Meta Description
While the exact method varies depending on your website platform, here’s a general overview:
- Access your website’s CMS or code: If you use a Content Management System (CMS) like WordPress, you can usually edit the meta description within the page editor.
- I use Yoast and All In One SEO (AIOSEO) plugins for WordPress to customize the Meta Descriptions and Meta Titles for each page.
- If you have a custom-built site, you’ll need to access the page’s HTML code.
- Locate the meta description tag: Look for the
<meta name="description" content="..." />tag within the<head>section of your page’s code. - Edit the content: Replace the existing text within the content attribute with your new, optimized meta description.
- Save your changes: Save the page or update the HTML file.

General On-Page SEO Tips

- Use tools like SE Ranking’s Website Audit or Yoast SEO (for WordPress) to check metadata.
- Monitor CTRs (Click-Through Rate) and adjust if necessary.

Web Accessibility & 508 Compliance
Don’t forget about accessibility!
Clear and well-structured titles and headings are also essential for users who rely on assistive technologies like screen readers. These users often navigate web pages by headings, so a logical heading structure makes it easier for them to understand and access your content.
Following the above best practices not only improves your web pages’ SEO, but also helps them become more accessible and 508 compliant.
Conclusion
By following these guidelines, you can craft effective page titles, headings, and meta descriptions that improve your on-page SEO for Google while also providing value to your users. Remember, on-page SEO is an ongoing process. Regularly review and optimize your content to ensure it’s aligned with your target audience’s needs and search engine best practices.
